families
I work with families of all ages and types:
-
Parents and young children/teenagers
-
Parents/grandparents and adult children
-
Siblings/step siblings
-
Multi-generational families
-
Blended families/step families
Sometimes families find it hard to communicate and can even reach a point where communication stops altogether.
Families can be loving and supportive, but sometimes the stresses and strains of everyday life makes this ideal difficult to achieve. Individual family members can feel isolated, rejected, sad or angry.
I have worked with families facing many challenges, including:
-
Parents, children and/or adolescents feeling misunderstood or not heard
-
Communication difficulties
-
Family arguments
-
Siblings are not getting on
-
Separation or divorce
-
Adapting to a new family/step family
-
Issues with in-laws
-
LGBT+ issues/sexual identity
-
Loss of a parent/family member
-
Effects of illness in the family
-
Stressful life cycle events
-
Problems at school/college/university
-
Cultural/religious issues
Counselling can help explore these difficult issues in a safe environment and help families re-connect. When family members are given a chance to share their feelings and feel heard much healing can take place.
When working with families I usually meet with various combinations of people. Some sessions may involve the whole family together, others may involve a sub-set of family members and some sessions may take place with individuals.
